Azerbaijan has demanded the withdrawal of the EU Monitoring Mission in Armenia and for ‘restrictions’ to be placed on the Armenian armed forces. On Saturday, Azerbaijani presidential aide Hikmet Hajiyev told Politico that a new agreement on their joint border commission ‘should be seen as sufficient for the withdrawal of the EU contingent’, adding that progress had been made in talks with Armenia. A CRRC survey found that only one in eight Georgians know what the EU Monitoring Mission (EUMM) in Georgia aims to achieve, with the largest proportion of those surveyed reporting that they do not know what the mission’s function is.  Georgia’s EUMM was established after the August 2008 War between Georgia and Russia, with the aim of stabilising ‘the situation on the ground’, and the unarmed civilian monitors continue to patrol Georgia’s administrative boundary lines with Abkhazia and South Os

Baku has condemned the European Union Mission in Armenia after its head cited Armenian reports of a potential renewed Azerbaijani offensive. The head of the EU Mission in Armenia, Markus Ritter, told Germany’s DW that ‘many Armenians believe there’ll be a spring offensive by Azerbaijan’. ‘If this doesn’t happen, our mission is already a success’, said Ritter.  However, he added that the observers cannot ‘detect, for instance, troop movements in preparation of another attack’ and that the f

Russia slams EU monitoring mission in Armenia

A

Russia’s Foreign Ministry has criticised the European Union for sending a monitoring mission to Armenia, accusing it of trying to undermine Russia’s influence in the region. On Monday, the Russian Foreign Ministry’s spokesperson Maria Zakharova accused the European Union of attempting to gain a foothold in Armenia. ‘Regrettably, this is not the first time when we see that the European Union is sparing no effort to win a foothold in our allied Armenia’, she said. ‘We only see political motive
