Armenia’s ruling Civil Contract party has failed to win a majority in the Yerevan City Council elections, despite receiving most votes. Their main challenger, National Progress led by Hayk Marutyan, came in second place. The preliminary result of Sunday’s election gave Civil Contract 24 of 65 seats on the council, with 33% of the vote. This was a dramatic decline from the previous elections in 2018, when Hayk Marutyan led the party’s list, winning 81% of the vote. National Progress, now led

Marutyan announced his election bid in a video published on his Facebook page on Tuesday. ‘There cannot be personal happiness when your community and the country are unhappy’, Marutyan said in his announcement video, questioning the governance and the transparency of the Yerevan Municipality.

For the first time since Armenia’s independence, the mayor of Yerevan has been removed by a vote of non-confidence by the city council.  Hayk Marutyan, once a close ally of Pashinyan, served as mayor of the Armenian capital since 2018.   With 44 for and 10 votes against, former Deputy Mayor of Yerevan Hrachya Sargsyan was elected to replace Marutyan as mayor.  In his last speech as mayor, Hayk Marutyan harshly criticised Armenia’s post-revolutionary government, accusing officials of asking h

Ruling party to oust ‘disloyal’ Yerevan mayor

The Yerevan City Council has initiated a process to oust Mayor Hayk Marutyan. Marutyan, an erstwhile ally of Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan, has since left the ruling Civil Contract party and had not endorsed Pashinyan in the summer snap parliamentary election.  In a Facebook post on its official party page, Civil Contract, which holds a majority of seats in the Yerevan municipality, justified the planned ouster of the mayor by citing his exit from the party, non-adherence to the party’s munic

Yerevan’s authorities have taken over waste-collection from Lebanon-based contractor Sanitek after the summer’s ‘rubbish crisis’. In mid-September, Yerevan residents found the ubiquitous black rubbish bins owned by the city’s waste removal contractor, Sanitek, tipped over. Standing next to them were new green containers owned by the city municipality.  The appearance of the new containers in mid-September was the latest manifestation of the ongoing row between Yerevan Municipality and San
