Chechen diaspora communities protest extradition of Russian agent Vadim Krasikov

Several Chechen diaspora communities in Europe have protested the extradition of Vadim Krasikov, a Russian FSB agent convicted in Germany for the murder of Ichkerian commander Zelimkhan Khangoshvili. Isa Daduev, coordinator of the Assembly of Chechens of Europe, told OC Media that protests were held in France, Austria, and Germany to express disagreement with the extradition of Krasikov back to Russia. Krasikov previously received a life sentence from a Berlin court in 2021 for the murder o

Daghestani man sentenced to prison for allegedly sharing pro-Ichkerian content

Russia’s Supreme Court has upheld a five-year sentence for Murad Dadashev for ‘justifying terrorism’ by sharing content advocating for Chechen independence on social media, which he denies doing. On 19 April, the Supreme Court upheld the Rostov-on-Don Military Court’s 2021 decision to indict Dadashev, a Daghestan resident, on charges of justifying terrorism. The Rostov-on-Don court sentenced the then-25-year-old Dadashev to five years in prison for allegedly sharing content promoting Ichkeri

T

The head of Chechnya, Ramzan Kadyrov, has hit back at the Polish Prime Minister’s suggestion that Chechnya ‘deserves independence’, accusing Europe of failing to support Chechens during their fight for independence during the 1990s. Ukrainian Parliament recognises independence of Chechnya

R

The Ukrainian parliament has recognised the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as an independent state that is ‘temporarily’ occupied by Russia, as well as condemning ‘the commission of genocide against the Chechen people’. Members of the Verkhovna Rada unanimously adopted the resolution on Tuesday. ‘We declare the recognition of the Chechen Republic of Ichkeria as temporarily occupied by the Russian Federation as a result of armed aggression committed in violation of the UN Charter’, the resoluti

Is a new armed uprising on the horizon in Chechnya?

L

A group of Chechen fighters in Ukraine have declared their intention to start a new uprising to break Chechnya from Russian rule. But while some opposition movements claim to have imminent plans to go on the attack, whether these words can turn into action is far from certain. Two figures in combat gear and black masks with rifles slung across their shoulders are setting fire to a flag of the Russian Republic of Chechnya. As the flag burns on the ground, a heavily altered voice declares that:

Fighting over a flag in the Pankisi Valley

L

A recent controversy surrounding graffiti of an Ichkerian flag in the Pankisi Valley underlines the enduring tensions between the local community and the Georgian authorities — especially after Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.  It’s not every day that graffiti warrants a 30-minute special reportage on Rustavi 2 a major and government-leaning television channel in Georgia. The special, which aired on 7 May, concerns an apparent panic that began in March 2022.  That month, a group of teens sprayp
