Lachin Corridor remains closed despite ‘rapidly deteriorating humanitarian situation’

The Lachin Corridor, connecting Nagorno-Karabakh to Armenia, remains blocked by Azerbaijan, as the region continues to grapple with supply shortages amid calls for its reopening. Nagorno-Karabakh has been under blockade since December last year and has experienced increasingly severe food, medicine, and energy shortages since. The Red Cross and the Russian peacekeeping mission stationed in Nagorno-Karabakh have been unable to deliver supplies and humanitarian aid since June. Stepanakert anno

Nagorno-Karabakh’s government announced on Saturday that the region would accept humanitarian aid sent by the Russian Red Cross through Azerbaijan-controlled territory. The announcement came hours after the parliament’s election of a new president.  While Azerbaijan has pushed for Nagorno-Karabakh to accept aid sent via the Aghdam–Stepanakert road for weeks, sending an aid convoy to the line of contact in late August, the government in Stepanakert had previously maintained that it would only a

With Azerbaijan’s blockade of the Lachin Corridor continuing, food and medical supplies in Nagorno-Karabakh are running out. The dwindling supplies have led some to warn that the region is entering the worst phase so far of the nine-month blockade.  Larisa, 69, moved to Nagorno-Karabakh’s capital of Stepanakert following the Second Nagorno-Karabakh War in 2020, after Azerbaijan took control of Togh, her village in Hadrut region.  ‘I have seen a lot of suffering’, Larisa tells OC Media. ‘My 1

Armenia slams Russia for ‘absolute indifference’

A

Armenia has condemned Russia’s ‘absolute indifference’ towards Azerbaijani attacks on Armenian territory, after Russia’s Foreign Ministry claimed that Armenia was to blame for the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.  In a scathing statement on Thursday, Armenia’s Foreign Ministry accused Russia of ‘absolute indifference’ to Azerbaijan’s attacks on Armenia’s territory in September 2022. It added that Russia had then ‘[left] unanswered’ an official request from Armenia for military

Azerbaijani border troops detained three residents of Nagorno-Karabakh at the Lachin checkpoint on Monday afternoon, prompting a protest in the region’s capital of Stepanakert. Azerbaijan announced that the young men would be detained for 10 days, allegedly for insulting the Azerbaijani flag two years ago.  The three football players, two of whom were born in 2001, the third in 2003, were charged with inciting national hatred and violating the Azerbaijani flag.  Azerbaijan’s Prosecutor’s Off

A convoy of lorries loaded with aid is stuck at the entrance to the Lachin Corridor, with Azerbaijani border guards so far refusing to allow it to enter Nagorno-Karabakh. The convoy was arranged by the Armenian Government, which says it consists of around 400 tonnes of food and other essential supplies. Late on Wednesday, the convoy passed the Armenian checkpoint on the border but was prevented from proceeding further.  The convoy comes in response to a growing humanitarian crisis among Nago

Thousands of protesters took to the streets in both Nagorno-Karabakh and Armenia’s capitals on Tuesday evening, demanding international intervention and support, as the Red Cross warned of a humanitarian crisis in Nagorno-Karabakh.  Protesters demanded action to support the blockaded region, which is facing critical shortages of staple goods.  Shortly before the protest, Armenia’s Prime Minister Nikol Pashinyan held a press conference discussing the blockade of Nagorno-Karabakh and defending
