Chechen detainee reportedly granted refugee status in Croatia

L

One of a group of Chechens detained in Croatia since November has reportedly been acquitted and granted asylum in the country. Two others, similarly detained on suspicion of religious extremism, were reportedly released.  An administrative court in Zagreb ruled on 13 July to release the detainee and grant him asylum, according to Isa Daduyev, a representative of the Assembly of Chechens of Europe.  Daduyev told OC Media that the decision came after a court had ruled on 23 May that there was

L

The Chechen human rights group, Vayfond, has reported that a group of Chechens who have been held in a migrant camp for six months have gone on hunger strike. ‘I felt I was in prison’: Georgian women in Italy’s shadow economy

T

Thousands of Georgian women have moved to Italy to work as caregivers for the elderly. But for many, a lack of legal status and the years-long separation from their families has extracted a heavy cost. On 3 March 2008, Mother’s Day, Elene (not her real name) packed her bags and left Georgia for Italy.  ‘Even though it has already been 12 years since I moved here, I cannot forget that day’, she told OC Media. ‘Instead of being with my children, I was leaving them, hoping to work enough to ens

‘This is no life’: The disillusionment of Azerbaijani migrants in Poland

O

Long hours, unsavoury jobs, low wages, and almost no institutional protections — life in Poland for Azerbaijani workers is far from the European dream. ‘After 12 hours at work, I return back home, quickly eat whatever I have at home, and go to sleep. This is no life. My routine is the same every day.’ Such is life according to Kamran, an Azerbaijani migrant worker in Poland. Kamran (not his real name) migrated to Poland from Azerbaijan in 2018. He is a storekeeper at a factory tha

Hundreds of Afghan refugees in Azerbaijan often find themselves stuck in legal limbo and mired in poverty. For many who are supported by the UN, dwindling funding and a lack of tailored intervention threaten to complicate their situation further. ‘I escaped the Taliban’s oppression. After my father, mother, and brother were killed, I left Kabul.’ Since leaving Afghanistan 13 years ago, Kandagha Amiri, 46, has lived in Azerbaijan, where has received asylum. He told OC Media that since his

Azerbaijan’s opposition in hot water over German migrant trafficking scandal

S

Azerbaijan’s opposition Musavat Party has found itself in hot water over an alleged migrant trafficking scheme to Germany. After several arrests and deportations, German court documents appear to allege that the party charged would-be migrants thousands of euros in exchange for evidence they were politically persecuted. On 13 November German police raided thirteen locations throughout the country in connection with an alleged human smuggling ring from Azerbaijan to Germany.  Habib Muntazi

‘Here you are nobody’: Georgians struggle to receive asylum in France

V

Sleeping in cockroach-infested rooms, or braving the winter cold on the street, life has not been easy for Georgians seeking asylum in France.  Battered, dusty toys and an old children’s bicycle lie on the pavement in front of a green tent. This is the new home of Mamuka, Sopo, and their seven-year-old son Lado (not their real names). They’ve come here to Montpellier, France looking for a better life.  Montpellier is one of many cities across the country where Georgian refugees arriv
