T

In Georgia’s patriarchal countryside, women are starting to take more leading roles in agriculture — but climate change threatens even the modest gains that women have made so far.   Lali Sukhitashvili inherited a number of beehives from her mother-in-law, one of the first beekeepers in the village, 14 years ago. ‘I was 29 when I had to emigrate and returned 14 years later. My sister was very young when she was diagnosed with an aneurysm. The doctors told her her chances of survival were only 2%, but I really wanted even this tiny chance.’ Women in Georgia very often lack a voice of their own. Georgia’s Constitutional Court has suspended a moratorium on purchasing agricultural land by foreign citizens. While the court ruled the ban was unconstitutional, the suspension will only be temporary as constitutional amendments are set to kick in. Foreign citizens now have nine days left to register land they have bought or inherited. The Constitutional Court announced its decision on 7 December, after being approached by two Greek citizens who were unable to register agricultural land th

Georgian Labour Party leader ‘stages fake interview’ with street vendor

The long-time chairperson the Georgian Labour Party, Shalva Natelashvili, has been accused of staging a fake interview with a street vendor to highlight the ‘unjust policies’ of the ruling Georgian Dream Party. On 30 August, the party summoned journalists to meet Ucha Gogiberidze, who Natelashvili claimed was a struggling fruit and vegetables seller, however Gogiberidze later turned out to be a party activist. The accusations emerged on Thursday after POSTV, a satirical government-leaning o

A dispute between an entrepreneur and greenhouse owner in Daghestan’s Nogay district and residents of the village of Nariman took on an ethnic component after a video allegedly of Chinese workers cooking a dog alive went viral on social media.
